Chapter Eleven
The sight of Dragon with his arms bound behind his head and raw rope burns around his neck made Bear want to leave bloody pieces of Dragon’s captors splattered all over the walls of the filthy little room. He stomped down the killing urge. Much as he’d love to slice the bastards to quivering ribbons, he knew he wasn’t up to the task right now. He needed to free Dragon, then the two of them had to get out of here as fast as they could.
Why the three had taken Dragon in the first place, Bear couldn’t say for sure. But the fact that Dragon was strung up like a goat for slaughter—not to mention the human skin the older of the two men wore and the scattered human bones—gave him a pretty good idea. He’d dealt with enough nomads and nightfeeders to know the signs. And Willow had told him there were nests of cannibals here.
He pressed a finger to his lips when Dragon’s eyes went wide with surprise and relief, though he knew Dragon wouldn’t make a sound. Dragon nodded when Bear held up his knife. Biting his lip in concentration, Bear hitched himself the few paces across the dirty floor to where Dragon lay. His crutch slipped in a small puddle of blood. He stumbled against the wall not far from the bolt to which Dragon was tied.
For a few seconds he stood perfectly still, barely breathing, his knife at the ready. The man curled on the pile of skins to the left of the door didn’t move a muscle. Neither did the older man, sprawled on the bare floor only a few paces away and snoring loudly. The woman grumbled something unintelligible, rolled over and settled with her back to the door.
Mother, that was close. Heart racing fast enough to make him dizzy, Bear put his back to the wall to steady himself, then gestured at Dragon to sit up. Dragon rolled sideways and squirmed himself silently into a sitting position, knees bent. Leaning over, Bear hooked his hand through Dragon’s elbow and helped haul him to his feet.
He paled, swayed and fell back against the wall, eyes closed. For a horrible moment, Bear thought he’d passed out. Then the gray eyes opened again, sharp and clear, and Bear grinned in pure relief.
Okay? he mouthed.
Dragon nodded. He jerked his head toward the bolt in the wall. Hurry.
Bear cut the rope tethering Dragon to the wall first. Next came the one around his ankles. That one was trickier. Bear had to lean his crutch against the wall and lower himself onto his good knee to do it. He felt something give deep inside his wound just before his knee hit the floor. Fluid oozed from the gash in his thigh and ran down his leg when he stood after cutting the rope binding Dragon’s legs. Blood, pus or both, he didn’t know. Not that it mattered right now. They could deal with it later, when they weren’t both in immediate danger of becoming someone else’s meal.
